A rollover on Interstate 91
A driver was killed in a single-vehicle rollover crash on Interstate 91 northbound in Whately on the afternoon of Thursday, October 29, Massachusetts State Police said, WWLP reported.
Troopers were called at about 3:20 p.m. to the crash near mile marker 32.6. The vehicle caught fire after the crash, and the Deerfield Fire Department helped at the scene. State Police confirmed that the driver died of their injuries. The driver’s name has not been released.
All northbound lanes and the left southbound lane of I-91 were closed while troopers worked the scene, State Police said.
A second crash nearby
Less than an hour later, at about 4:11 p.m., troopers were called to a separate three-vehicle crash farther south on I-91 northbound, near mile marker 29.2. Injuries were reported, and all three vehicles had to be towed. That scene was cleared shortly after 5 p.m. State Police have not said whether the two crashes were connected.
The investigation
State Police are investigating the rollover and have not said what caused it. Larson Law will update this article if officials release more information.
Traffic deaths in Massachusetts this year
MassDOT’s preliminary count shows 247 people killed in Massachusetts crashes from January 1 to early October 2026, the lowest total for that part of the year since at least 2015. Our page on Massachusetts traffic injury by the numbers sets out the figures and where they come from. They are statewide numbers and don’t explain any one crash.
Legal context from Larson Law
This section is the firm’s general explanation of Massachusetts law. It is not a statement about this crash or the people involved.
When someone dies in a crash in Massachusetts, the law allows a wrongful death claim against anyone whose negligence caused the death. Family members don’t file it themselves: it is brought by the personal representative of the estate, the executor or administrator, under G.L. c. 229, § 2. Our guide to the two claims behind a Massachusetts wrongful death explains how that claim and the related survival claim work.
A wrongful death claim generally must be filed within three years. Our page on Massachusetts injury claim deadlines and notice requirements lists that deadline with the others.
